ZPC Serves the First NA Wine in 26 Years at Winefest

Zero Proof Insights: Finally Time for NA Wine | Winefest #26 | by Cate

The Birth of Wine and Fundraising for Pediatric Research

A quarter of a century ago, I was invited to one of the first Winefest meetings where a group of imaginative and adventurous individuals united with a mission to venture into the uncharted territory of wine dinners and fundraising—all aimed at pioneering pediatric research. The pressing question on everyone's mind was how to center this fundraising initiative around children's health while simultaneously focusing on wine. I lauded their deliberative approach and their quest for a decisive plan.

Inspired by Children’s Books

After the initial gathering, I went and did the “Google search” of the '90s—a visit to the local Barnes & Noble bookstore. Immersing myself in the children's section for hours, I emerged with a large selection of books filled with captivating illustrations showcasing the scenic splendor of vineyards and the abundance they provide. Inspired, I brought a stack of them to the next meeting, laid them out on the conference table and proposed a unique idea: Why not commission an artist every year to craft a one-of-a-kind piece of art? This artwork could be auctioned and prominently featured in the Winefest invitations and promotional materials. The twist? Emphasize the beauty of grapes, vineyards, and the rich experiences that art can convey. To my delight, this idea was embraced, and it has become an annual tradition. Each year, I eagerly await the invitation, which features a new artist's masterpiece.

Artist Donte Mearon: Paints Canvases of Joy, Echoing the Rhythms of Music, Family, and Community at Winefest No.26

This year, for Winefest No. 26, the talented artist Donte Mearon, known as @throwpaint, has created stunning and vibrant paintings that capture the essence of Winefest's mission, including texture and bright, bold colors.

Upon receiving the invitation for Winefest: A Toast to Children's Health , I promptly contacted them to inquire whether we could offer a nonalcoholic wine at this event, which typically attracts a crowd of approximately 800 people. It didn’t take long to navigate our way to securing the very FIRST NA wine pouring table at the event.

A Toast to Collaboration

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Noughty's founder, Amanda Thompson of Thompson & Scott, UK, for her support and enthusiastic involvement throughout this venture. Special thanks to Micah Sampson of Sampson Family Wines, Noughty's US Distributor, for his unwavering support and assistance in securing the product. We also express much gratitude to Dan and Kari Watje, ZPC members, for their generous sponsorship that made this initiative possible. It's worth noting that Winefest did not provide us with any special treatment for being an NA offering; we had to pay the same entry and pouring fees as everyone else.

It's clear that the alignment of all these elements played a crucial role in the success of this endeavor.

It will always be an honor to have been the first NA wine at Winefest No. 26 in 2023.

The Real Response to NA Wine

Serving the first NA wine at Winefest evolved into a deep exploration into what happens when introducing a premium dealcoholized wine in a landscape historically dominated by alcoholic options. As we greeted each guest, we said: "Welcome! Tonight we are pouring Noughty, the first and only nonalcoholic wine at Winefest. Would you like a sample?"

Amidst the vibrant energy of WineFest No. 26, our table became a heartwarming hub of shared stories and personal journeys, all while savoring elevated NA wine—a truly remarkable experience.

Which response do you think we heard the most often?

1) "Nooo" (Eyes opening wide while slowly backing away)
2) "No thanks, I'll come back when I'm pregnant!"
3) "OK, I'll try some."
4) "Yes, I would love to try Noughty & thank you for being here!"
5) "Well, that's an answer to prayer!"

Thankfully, 3 & 4 were the most common responses. 1 & 2 happened a few times and were funny at first and then a stark reminder of where we’re at culturally. 5 was our FAVORITE response, reminding us that this kind of work changes lives.

For everyone who stopped by for a taste, the interactive part of this experience became a cherished highlight.

Deeper Connections Through NA

Their interest extended beyond just a mere tasting; they remained to engage in deeper dialogues about personal experiences with alcohol and the growing NA movement. It became more than a tasting session and we appreciated the connections that we were able to make.

A Taste of Change

One woman had walked by with her husband. Upon realizing we offered a nonalcoholic option, he deliberately distanced himself from our table, even though it was clear she was interested. A little later in the evening, she approached alone, curious to explore our offerings. She confided that they own a vineyard in California. Tired of the nightly routine of wine — and the experiencing discomfort and unwanted calories — she was in search of a more favorable alternative. Noughty provided her with a delightful solution; it was love at first taste. We can imagine her now, enjoying it in her elegant glass, savoring a drink that doesn't compromise her wellbeing.

Discreet Switch to Noughty

At the heart of the evening was a recurring scene: middle-aged men stealthily approaching our pouring table, each extending their exquisite wine glasses to be filled with Noughty's robust, dealcoholized Syrah. This cycle unfolded numerous times; characterized by hesitancy and an unspoken desire for discretion. Within our team, a mutual recognition between all of us and an understated celebration of this subtle trend, a testament to the inclusion of NA options into the domain traditionally held by their alcoholic counterparts.

Walt's Inspiring Journey

Winefest #26's celebratory buzz took a sobering pause when the 800+ guests fell silent to hear from one of the hospital's brave patients.

Walt’s words resonated powerfully and provided a masterful portrayal of hope in its purest form.

Walt McGrory, @waltmcgrory  a celebrated and accomplished D1 basketball player, stepped forward. With a heart both eloquent and brave, he shared his journey since being diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2021, which led to a leg amputation and a daily fight for life. Despite the challenges, he stood before the crowd, a figure of positivity and poise beyond his years, infusing the Winefest 26 audience with the sense that they were part of something truly special and transformative.

He voiced the deep gratitude that both he and his family harbor for the relentless support and world-class care provided by M Health Fairview Masonic Children's Hospital. Walt's words showcased the remarkable strides pediatric research has taken, allowing everyone to witness the stellar care the hospital prides itself on. On 8.19.23 Walt shared this on his Instagram:  "Been through a lot of surgeries, but yesterday was the probably the biggest one yet. I had open surgery on my left lung to remove the tumors that have been growing and progressing. Unfortunately, it was worse than expected when they got inside. They removed over 20 of the tumors, but around 30-40 were not resectable. The plan was to have this lung operated on first and do the right lung a couple weeks after. But based on the results of this surgery, we’ll need to find some treatment that can stop and most likely shrink the tumors too before considering surgery again. Which we haven’t been able to find yet these past two years. But we will keep searching and fighting no matter what. Things may be getting more serious and urgent, but we’ve faced a lot of setbacks in the past two years, and this is nothing more than that. Giving up is not an option! A lot of people say that, but when things get really tough, they give themselves a way out. Well, in my case there literally is no way out. Right now it can be a bit hard to see as I’m sitting in the hospital with half a leg and a chest tube in my lung. But the possibility is out there, and I intend to do whatever it takes to find it. Thank you to everyone out there helping me to do this and for all the thoughts, prayers, and well wishes. Your support gives me the fight to stay strong through it all 💪🏼"

Thank you, Walt, your words resonate powerfully and provide a masterful portrayal of hope in its purest form. May God's protective hand guide you and your family throughout your journey and for many years ahead.

A Toast to Unity

Congratulations to everyone involved with Winefest 26. The combined efforts raised $1.9 million - a true testament to the power of community and unity. And special thanks to my daughter, Callan Faulkner, for being part of our team as we poured our way into history.

It’s a family affair when my daughter Callan shows up to support us!

Championing the NA Movement

Making a pioneering footprint at Winefest, we proudly championed the NA Movement's spirit, offering opportunity for guests to experience joy and celebration responsibly and inclusively. Drawing inspiration from Walt’s reservoir of hope, we envision a future where the NA Movement blossoms, nurturing a diverse landscape where choices are many, and all are welcome and safe. A toast to the inexhaustible spirit of innovation and the bright flame of hope.
